Greeks who changed the world in 2016
For yet another year Greeks from all over the world, managed to excel, to abolish the borders and make us proud with their achievements. The ellines.com team chose 12 of them, one for each month of 2016, who caused international sensation with their work and personality.
January – Leonidas Kavakos
Violinist Leonidas Kavakos has been named the winner of the Léonie Sonning Music Prize 2017, worth DKK 600,000 (€80,000). The award is Denmark’s highest musical honour and has been given annually to an internationally recognised composer, instrumentalist, conductor or singer since 1959. Read more…
February – Michael Paleodimos
Michael Paleodimos is a cinematographer based in London. He is the Director of Photography in the film “Stutterer”, a film which won the Oscar for Best Short Film, in the 88th Academy Awards Ceremony. Read more…
March – Dorothea Pinotsi
Researchers led by the Greek scientist, may be closer to unraveling the underlying causes of Parkinson’s disease, after identifying the point at which alpha-synuclein – a protein believed to play a key role in the condition – becomes toxic to the brain. Read more…

Scientists from the Italian Institute of Technology led by the Greek researcher are developing ‘smart materials’ that could lead to robots that will decompose like a human body once they’ve reached the end of their life-span. Read more…
May – Paul Alivisatos
The President of USA, Barack Obama, awarded Paul Alivisatos, former director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), with the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest honor for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research. Read more…
June – Georgios Giannakis
University of Minnesota Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Georgios Giannakis has been awarded a prestigious McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair by University President Eric Kaler. This is one of the University’s highest faculty awards. Professor Giannakis, who also serves as director of the University’s Digital Technology Center, is only the third professor in the University’s College of Science and Engineering to receive the honor. July – Panagiotis Artemiadis
The Greek researcher at Arizona State University has discovered how to control multiple robotic drones using the human brain. A controller wears a skull cap outfitted with 128 electrodes wired to a computer. The device records electrical brain activity. If the controller moves a hand or thinks of something, certain areas light up. Read more…

August – Yiannis Tsapras
An international team of astronomers including the Greek researcher, has found clear evidence of a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our Solar System. The new world, designated Proxima b, orbits its cool red parent star every 11 days and has a temperature suitable for liquid water to exist on its surface, if it were present. This rocky world is a little more massive than the Earth and is the closest exoplanet to us; it may even be the closest possible abode for life beyond our own Sun. September – George Paxinos
The British Medical Association gave the award for “Best Illustrated Book” of 2015 to Atlas of the Human Brain, Fourth Edition, authored by Juergen Mai, Milan Majtanik, and the Greek Professor George Paxinos. The first edition of the book received The Award for Excellence in Publishing in Medical Science from the Association of American Publishers in 1997. Read more…

October – Konstantinos Tzelepis and George Vassiliou
Researchers from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and their collaborators have adapted a CRISPR gene editing technique and used it to find new therapeutic targets for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). In research published in Cell Reports, the team identify a large number of genes that could serve as potential targets for anti-AML treatments and describe how inhibition of one of these genes, KAT2A, destroys AML cells without harming non-leukaemic blood cells. November – Katerina Harvati
This year’s state of Baden-Württemberg Prize for Basic Research goes to Professor Katerina Harvati of the Senckenberg Center for Human Evolution and Paleoenvironment at the University of Tübingen. The €100,000 award is Germany’s richest state research prize. Read more…
December – Asimina Arvanitaki
Asimina Arvanitaki, who holds the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Aristarchus Chair at Perimeter, has won the prestigious New Horizons in Physics Prize for 2017, making her the fifth Perimeter Institute Faculty member to earn the award since its inception in 2013. Arvanitaki was recognized for her pioneering work that bridges theory and experiment to forge novel ways of exploring particle physics. Και να φανταστούμε ότι στην ίδια μας την χώρα ελάχιστοι τους γνωρίζουν!! Ντροπή στα ΜΜΕ που ξεσαλώνουν στα κουτσομπολιά και τα κοσμικά και δεν προβάλλουν τέτοιους χαρισματικούς Ελληνες που μας κάνουν περήφανους παγκοσμίως. Νάναι όλοι τους καλά, τόσο αυτοί όσο και αρκετοί άλλοι αντίστοιχου βεληνεκούς που δυστυχώς ακόμα δεν ξέρουμε.

Υπάρχει σοβαρός λόγος που δεν προβάλλονται από τα ΜΜΕ, όπως και πολλά άλλα. Άλλωστε αυτός είναι ο ρόλος τους εδώ και δεκαετίες (σχεδόν από τότε που ήλθε στην Ελλάδα η ιδιωτική τηλεόραση). Η 4η, η 5η και η 6η εξουσία (Τύπος, Συνδικαλισμός και Τράπεζες) έχουν πρωταρχική ευθύνη για την κατάσταση της χώρας, πολύ μεγαλύτερη από τις 3 πρώτες εξουσίες (Νομοθετική, Δικαστική και Εκτελεστική). Βέβαια σήμερα η 5η και η 6η παραπαίουν, η δε 4η έχει χάσει την αίγλη της. Εξακολουθεί όμως να κάνει ζημιά, στηριζόμενη στην έλλειψη παιδείας του Νεοέλληνα (ομιλώ για την γενικότερη καλλιέργεια και όχι μόνο για μόρφωση, η μόρφωση είναι απλώς τμήμα της γενικότερης παιδείας), αν και πάντα θα υπάρχουν Έλληνες (κατά κανόνα ομογενείς του εξωτερικού) που θα μας κάνουν υπερήφανους. Μπράβο τους.
