The first underwater gallery in the world

An “atmospheric” underwater cavern on the outskirts of Amorgos will host a special exhibition of photography, three collections of dozens of submarine sites of the Aegean Sea, by the photographer and freediver, Stefanos Kontos, from 2013 until 2018. In the depth of 7-17 meters, the technique of free diving meets the art of photography in a pioneering art event on the Greek seabed from 19 to 22 September.

The Underwater Gallery is the world’s first photo exhibition where photography, as well as the installation of exhibits and technical infrastructure, was done exclusively with the technique of free apnea diving. In order to expose the photos in the open sea, a special printing-on-aluminum technique was used, and special light fixtures will be used to illuminate them.

The exhibition area has free access to the public and one can visit it with both free and autonomous diving. For those who so desire, there will be the opportunity to take a class at the Amorgos Diving Center and be escorted to the exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition can stay in Amorgos hotels at special prices.

The Underwater Gallery takes place alongside the Authentic Big Blue program of the annual international diving event in Amorgos and, on the second day of the exhibition, on 20 September, the Authentic Big Blue athletes with the team members will visit the cave. On September 21, a night-dive is scheduled to the underwater exhibition area, in the enlightened cave.

This groundbreaking event is sponsored by Chromaluxe, big blue dive lights, meister special diving gear and Technohull ribs.

The Underwater Gallery is the evolution of the “Greece underwater – on a single breath” exhibition hosted by Eugenides Planetarium in 2015 and was the second-largest exhibition in the history of the institution, attracting more than 30,000 visitors.
