International recognition for the fighter against cancer

Born in Thessaloniki, in 1978, Emmanuel Karagiannis joined the Department of Chemical Engineering of Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, where he graduated in 2001 with a degree of 9.3, while he is now following a distinguished career abroad covering the post-doctoral researcher position at MIT. A year ago, he had impressed the scientific community worldwide  with the discovery of 120 proteins that inhibit the growth of cancer cells, while the last three decades, scientists have discovered only 30 of them. Actually, this research by Emmanuel Karagiannis was hosted in magazines issued by the U.S. scientific community. As he said “I do not turn my back to Greece, but to be honest. In our country there is still no such technology background, nor the appropriate resources. Over the last decade significant efforts are being made, particularly through funding from the European Union, but things are still at an early stage. Greece has a major force of worthy and capable students, who, in case they wont find a work elsewhere or become civil servants, they will end up doing limited things or they will go abroad. Nevertheless, I’m sure that all the Greek scientists abroad, under the right conditions and circumstances, are willing to support any effort to promote research in homeland”.
