Specialised in the treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors

Konstantinos Gousias is the Head of Lab for Neurosurgical Sciences at the University Hospital Bergmannsheil in Bochum and Senior Consultant at the Neurosurgical Dept. University Hospital of Bochum. He is a specialist in the treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors.

He was born in 1978 in Ioannina, Greece. In 2004 he graduated from the School of Medicine of the University of Ioannina, and he obtained his PhD from the same University a few years later.

He was among the researchers led by scientists at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who have identified genetic markers for two subtypes of glioma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The team has uncovered 13 new genetic markers associated with the disease, and confirmed 13 previously discovered markers. The researchers also found a clear difference in the genetic risk factors for high-grade glioblastoma versus low-grade glioma. The genetic markers identified in the study were linked to higher susceptibility for developing brain tumors; however, each genetic marker gave just a modest increase in risk, according to researchers. They confirmed 13 previously identified markers and uncovered 13 new genetic markers associated with this aggressive disease. The study was published in Nature Genetics.

Konstantinos Gousias is also an editorial board member of international medical journals and author of medical books on the subject of surgical and molecular analysis of brain tumors.
