President of the Australian Diabetes Society
Sophia Zoungas is an academic endocrinologist with an emerging national and international reputation as a clinical researcher in the fields of diabetes and vascular risk. She is the Head of the Diabetes and Clinical Research Program at Monash University. She is the President of the Australian Diabetes Society, the leading society for research, medical practice and education in diabetes.
She is also the current chairperson for the National Association for Diabetes Centres in Australia.
Her current primary appointment is as the Head, Diabetes and Clinical Research Program, Monash Applied Research Stream, School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. In this capacity she directs and supports projects on diabetes, cardiovascular health, kidney health and health care delivery, as well as advise on clinical epidemiological methods and trial design/conduct/reporting. Professor Zoungas has a conjoint Professorial Research Fellow appointment at the George Institute for Global Health.

She is the current international clinical director of the ADVANCE-ON study, a post trial observational study of over 10,000 patients with type 2 diabetes.
“Our study shows that age or age at diagnosis and duration of diabetes disease are linked to the risk of death and marcovascular complications”, Dr. Zoungas claims.
She has received several awards, like the National Heart Foundation Career Development Award, the Diabetes Australia Research Fellowship, the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia Postdoctoral Health Professional Award, the Pfizer Research Fellowship, the High Blood Pressure Research Council Fellowship and the Henry Burger Prize for the Best Original Research Publication.
