The former British Royal Navy Chief of the Defence Staff

Admiral Sir George Zambellas was the Chief of the Defence Staff of the British Royal Navy and the first British Royal Navy Officer of Greek descent holding that position.

Zambellas was born on April 4th, 1958, to Greek parents Michalis and Rosemary Zambellas, who raised him in Southern Rhodesia now Zimbabwe, where he completed school. Later on, he studied Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at Southampton University in England.

In 1980, Zambellas was commissioned as an Acting Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy and was distinguished for excellence in his duties. He started his military career as a helicopter pilot and he also took command of the mine-sweeper HMS Cattistock and frigates HMS Chatham and HMS Argyll.

He was twice honoured by Queen Elizabeth for his service. For his naval manoeuvres in the Sierra Leone civil war in particular, he received the Distinguished Service Cross in 2001.

“The youngsters are our future and I have never been more confident that they will easily match and exceed what my generation has achieved”, Zambellas admits.

On January 24, 2013, Admiral Sir George Zambellas received the honourary title of First Sea Lord according to the announcement of the British Secretary of State for Defence Philip Hammond, who praised Zambellas for his effort in updating the strategic mindset of the Royal Navy.

As First Sea Lord, Sir George Zambellas’s duty is to preserve the readiness, high moral and competence of the Fleet and to support the Secretary of State for Defence in managing and heading the Armed Forces.

Sir George Zambellas has been married to Amanda Jane LeCudennec since 1982 and they have 3 sons.

Sincere congratulations Sir, although had you been in the Australian Navy as I was, you would have struggled to get up half the rank you achieved in England. Especially in my state. But your record is one of honour and integrity and I hope that you can well serve the cause of a more multicultural Navy
