“France bows to bouzouki”

Born in a family of musicians, Nicolaos Syros studied in the ‘70s next to the greatest singers and composers of Rebetiko from Tsitsanis, Papaioannou and Mitsaki Roukounas all the way to Kostas Roukounas and Mark Vamvakaris. From 1981 he lives in France. He has worked with prominent Greek personalities and friends of Greece abroad such as George Moustakas by Vassilis Alexakis and Jacques Lakarier has represented our country in a series of major events promoting contemporary Greek culture. He participated as a solist in the concert of the symphonic orchestra of the Paris Opera, Theodorakis’ Zorba at the Royan Festival (July 2003), and participated to the promotion of Axion Esti at the Gyptis theater in Marseilles (May 2003), excerpts from works of Theodorakis (Second Forum philhellenic Organizations, Montpellier, November 2002). He participated in Greek poetry presentations organized by Jacques Lakarier in over 30 French cities, the French Institute in Saint-Jean de Vedas and elsewhere, while he prepared the music performance by Vassilis Alexakis, La Grèce te suivra (Paris, Café de la Danse, 1988). He interpreted Rebetika songs in the acclaimed documentary of Markos Vamvakaris’ “George Zervas” and Roviros Manthoulis’ “Yannis Ritsos’”, while the album “Our old house” (in collaboration with George Georges and Notis Mavroudis) is still the best selling Rebetiko disk in Greece, eversince it first hit the charts in 1986.
