Researches the emotional processes during sleep

Lampros Perogamvros is researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at the University of Geneva.

Dr.Perogamvros was part of a major research that confirmed that dreaming does not just happen in the REM phase but can also take place in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, when brain activity is slower. The research “The neural correlates of dreaming”, which was led by Francesca Siclari, was published at the scientific journal “Nature Neuroscience”.

His research is mainly focused on the implication of reward, memory and emotional processes in human behavior across distinct vigilance states. One of the main hypotheses addressed by his research is that the activation of these processes during human sleep and dreams contributes to memory consolidation and emotional homeostasis. Conversely, dysregulation of this activation during sleep, would be implicated in the development of psychiatric disorders, like depression and addiction. To test this hypothesis, Lampros Perogamvros uses a clinical, behavioral and neurophysiological approach.

He is also interested in the interactions between neuroscience, arts and philosophy and more specifically, in applying neuroscience to traditional artistic and philosophical questions, like introspection, consciousness and creativity.
Lampros Perogamvros obtained his medical degree at the University of Athens, Greece in 2006 and his master degree in Philosophy at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in 2014. In the period 2008-2014, he completed his specialty in Psychiatry at the Geneva University Hospitals.

From January 2010 until now, he is a senior researcher at the University of Geneva and from December 2014 till present, he is a research fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
