The Greeks who excelled globally in January

For yet another month Greeks from all over the world, managed to excel, to abolish the borders and make us proud with their achievements. The ellines.com team chose five of them, who during the month January caused international sensation with the work and personality.

1. Tony Tiganis – View Profile

Greek-Australian scientist and researcher Tony Tiganis may  hold the key in the fight against obesity. Tiganis is a professor  and Deputy Head (Research) of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Monash University. He is in charge of the Tiganis Laboratory which is a Cellullar signalling and human desease laboratory. Tiganis and his team have been researching the connection between two naturally occurring hormones, which he says has given scientists new insights into how the brain regulates body fat.

2. Alexandre Desplat – View Profile

Alexandre Desplat won for yet another year nomination for the top awards. He won 2 Oscar nominations in the same category “Music Original Score” with two films “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “The Imitation Game” and a Golden Globe nomination for the soundtrack of the movie “The imitation Game”.

3. Eleni Antoniadou – Read more

Forbes magazine has included in the list 30 Under 30 2015 in Healthcare and in the third place the Greek researcher Eleni Antoniadou. The Greek scientist is engaged in nanosciences and regenerative medicine. She is one of the scientists who believe that in the near future will be able to grow vital organs from cells of the same patients requiring transplants, which the organization is less likely to reject.

4. Madeline Singas – Read more

Madeline Singas became Nassau County’s acting district attorney. She is the first Greek- American woman to take a similar position. Singas is the daughter of Greek immigrants. She was born in Massachusetts. Her father was born in the village Glina and her mother in Argirochori.

5. Panos Deloukas – View profile

Panos Deloukas is Professor of Cardiovascular Genomics at the William Harvey Research Institute and Queen Mary University and also member of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. He became widely known for his research on longevity and human height genes.
