The Greek Star of the Canadian television industry

George Stroumboulopoulos is a broadcast veteran in television and radio and is one of the most trusted and respected broadcasters in Canada.

He is the host and co-executive producer of “George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight”, Canada’s primetime talk show.

Born in 1972 in Ontario, to a Greek father and an Ukranian mother, he never lost touch with his Greek roots.

If, when you read his last name, you thought that it is considered a “big name” because of its many syllables…you were wrong. Canadians did find the name long and funny when they first heard it, but he refused to change it or treat it as an obstacle to his career; instead, he managed to establish it, going as far as to name his record-breaking show “George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight.

Among his most famous interviewees are Larry King, Zach Galifianakis, but also…Kermit, as well as a considerable number of politicians and actors. Possibly his most controversial interview was when he invited to the same show the Canadian prime minister and a porn actor, and had  them seated next to each other.

With close to 3 million Canadians watching George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight weekly. Online, the George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight YouTube Channel has over 60 million views and a strong international following.

Stroumboulopoulos began his journalism career in 1993 at a radio station in Kelowna, British Columbia. He then moved to Toronto, Ontario, where he worked in radio for four years, at The Fan 590 and 102.1 The Edge. In 2000, George began his television career as the producer and host of NewMusic and MuchNews on the popular specialty television channel, MuchMusic. He remained at MuchMusic until 2005 when he joined the CBC as host and co-executive producer of The Hour. Starting out on what was then CBC Newsworld, he quickly grew The Hour to a critical and popular success on the main CBC Network.

In 2007, he returned to radio to host a syndicated music and talk show, The Strombo Show.

He is a passionate advocate of many social and environmental issues and has been an active supporter of numerous causes throughout his career.

In March 2011, he was named the first Canadian National Ambassador Against Hunger for the world’s biggest humanitarian agency, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). In 2008, Stroumboulopoulos was the driving force behind One Million Acts of Green, his appeal was answered by 1.6 million citizens and he was the first to set the example, together with his family. In January 2010, he helped rally together actors, artists and athletes for Haiti relief efforts as the executive producer and co-host of Canada for Haiti, a live benefit that raised over 27 million dollars for Haitian earthquake victims. On March 6, 2012, the World Economic Forum announced that he had been selected as a Young Global Leader (YGL) for 2012 – George was one of three Canadians to receive the global honour.

The Greek journalist has also been involved with numerous charitable initiatives including Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund (Canada), the Canada Africa Partnership on AIDS (CAP AIDS), War Child Canada, and Make Poverty History. He sits on the Board of Directors for The David Suzuki Foundation, as well as Artists for Peace and Justice Canada (APJ).

George Stroumboulopoulos is not famous only for his television and radio appearances, but also for his charity work. Through his show, he sponsored the “One million acts of green” campaign, calling all Canadians to do something for the environment. His appeal was answered by 1.600.000 citizens, and he was the first to set the example, together with his family. He was the presenter for the “ Hip hop for Africa” show, organized to fund Nelson Mandela’s organization supporting children in Africa, while he traveled to the Arctic to learn more about the area’s civilization and to prevent the loss of the Inuit identity.

He has been to Sudan to support War Child Canada, a canadian institute supporting war children, as well as to Zambia for the World AIDS Day. Moreover, he supports Make Poverty History, has been appointed Ambassador Against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Program and visited its operations in Pakistan and Haiti,  and enthusiastically endorses the Freerice.com campaign, helping to feed millions of malnourished children.[:]
