1.Lydia Kavraki

Rice University computer scientist Lydia Kavraki has received one of the most prestigious honors in her field, the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Athena Lecturer Award. Read more…

2.Yannis Kevrekidis – Panagiotis Karkanas – Nicholas Peppas – George Triantis – Nicholas Christakis

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced the election of 228 new members; 40 of them are from 19 countries. Among them there are the 5 distinguished Greek researchers. The Academy’s membership of 4,900 Fellows and 600 Foreign Honorary Members includes many of the most accomplished scholars and scientists, writers, artists, politicians, businessmen and philanthropists worldwide. Read more…

3. Antonios Mikos

Bioengineers at Rice University, the University of Maryland and Wake Forest University have received a $6.25 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to establish the Center for Engineering Complex Tissues (CECT). Antonios Mikos, director of the Center for Excellence in Tissue Engineering and director of the J.W. Cox Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering, serves as Rice’s principal investigator for the five-year grant. Read more…

4.Constantinos Petrovas – Elias Vagios

Scientists in USA, led by Constantinos Petrovas, have created a two-pronged antibody that aids the immune system in finding and eliminating HIV-infected cells that are hard to see. In the research participated another Greek scientist, Elias Vagios of the Department of Histopathology at the Venizelion Hospital of Heraklion, Crete. Read more…
