For yet another month Greeks from all over the world, managed to excel, to abolish the borders and make us proud with their achievements. The ellines.com team chose 5 of them, who during the month March caused international sensation with the work and personality.

1.Katerina Harvati

New research from the University of Adelaide research has found Neanderthals cleverly concocted plant-based painkillers and antibiotics. Hardened plaque harvested from Neanderthals is loaded with genetic material from plants and animals these prehistoric hominins ate, as well as remnants of microbes that reveal a surprising amount about how they lived and even what made them sick. In the research participated the Greek scientist. The study was a collaboration between University of Adelaide’s Centre for Ancient DNA, the university’s dental school, and the University of Liverpool in the UK. Read more…

3.Demetrios Vassilatis

A team of Greek researchers has discovered a substance that successfully treated laboratory mice suffering from the equivalent of human Parkinson’s Disease, creating new hope of an eventual cure for humans. Their findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) review in the United State. The head of the team of researchers Demetrios Vassilatis, of the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA), noted that the discovery was still at a preclinical stage but might lead to a new treatment route in the future. Read more…

4.Michael Cosmopoulos

European Academy of Sciences and Arts inducts Michael Cosmopoulos at a ceremony held at the University of Salzburg. The induction puts Cosmopoulos, the Hellenic Government-Karakas Foundation Endowed Professor in Greek Studies, among the ranks of top scholars and scientists including 33 Nobel Prize winners and one pope, Benedict XVI. 5.Christina Psomas

French researchers, among them the Greek researcher, have identified a marker that makes it possible to differentiate “dormant” HIV-infected cells from healthy cells. This discovery will make it possible to isolate and analyze reservoir cells which, by silently hosting the virus, are responsible for its persistence even among patients receiving antiviral treatment, whose viral load is undetectable. It offers new therapeutic strategies for targeting infected cells. Read more…
