The Greeks who excelled globally in May

For yet another month Greeks from all over the world, managed to excel, to abolish the borders and make us proud with their achievements. The ellines.com team chose five of them, who during the month May caused international sensation with the work and personality.

1.Panagiotis Roussos

President Obama welcomed more than 100 leading scientists and engineers from across the country and around the world to thank them for their work on some of the most challenging and complex issues in science and technology. These individuals, the latest recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), spent two days in Washington, D.C., meeting with Administration leaders and sharing the insights of their work. 2.Paul Alivisatos

The President of USA awarded Paul Alivisatos, former director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), with the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest honor for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research. Read more…

Researchers from the University at Buffalo, among them the Greek scientist, remove excess additives from drugs, which could reduce the odds of serious allergic reactions and other side effects. Read more…

4.Anna-Maria Georgoudaki

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden led by a Greek researcher, have generated antibodies that reprogramme a type of macrophage cell in the tumour, making the immune system better able to recognise and kill tumour cells. The study, which is published in the journal Cell Reports, could lead to a new therapy and provide a potentially important diagnostic tool for breast cancer and malignant melanoma. Read more…

5.Asimina Arvanitaki

Asimina Arvanitaki is the first woman to hold a research chair at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, after a new joint chair was announced in partnership with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The $8 million Stavros Niarchos Foundation Aristrachus Chair in Theoretical Physics is an $8 million partnership with the foundation and PI and will help build and grow research and training ties between the institute and Greece, according to a release.
