Sheds light on the molecular mechanisms of cellular growth control

[:el]

Constantinos Demetriades is a Max Planck Research Group Leader, leading the group of Cell Growth Control in Health and Age-Related Disease at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing (MPI-AGE) in Cologne, Germany.

He is one the six Greek researchers of the 406 European researchers that will be supported by the European Research Council (ERC) with grants to continue their research. ERC’s purpose is to support talented early-career scientists, who have already produced excellent supervised work, into becoming independent researchers and the research leaders of tomorrow. The funding, worth €605 million in total and up to €1.5 million per grant, will enable them to set up their own research teams and pursue ground-breaking ideas.

Constantinos Demetriades was born in 1982, in Veria, Greece. He obtained his Biology Degree from the Department of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2003 and performed his PhD studies in the field of Molecular Oncology at the Biomedical Sciences Research Center ‘Alexander Fleming’ (2004-2006, Athens, Greece) and the Department of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2006-2009, Thessaloniki, Greece). He is also a former postdoc of the Teleman lab at DKFZ, Heidelberg (2010-2016).

His PhD work has focused on the mechanisms of transcriptional regulation of viral and cellular genes and its role in gene expression and cancer. Also, his work has pointed out the importance of Alu repetitive elements in complex transcriptional phenomena implicated in primate and human evolution. As a member of Dr Teleman’s group, his postdoctoral work identified novel cellular mechanisms that regulate mTOR signaling in response to nutrient starvation and cellular stresses. The aim of the Demetriades group is to unravel the molecular networks that control cellular growth and physiology in health and in age-related diseases, such as cancer.

He is also an Associate Faculty Member at the F1000 Faculty and works with Faculty Member Aurelio Teleman to recommend the scientific literature in their field. The F1000 Faculty is a body of more than 8,000 leading experts in Biology and Medicine that selects and recommends top articles in the life sciences.

Moreover, Constantinos has responsibility for checking the contents of the journals Cell and Molecular Cell, to ensure that the highest quality research relevant to their own interests within these publications is comprehensively and systematically evaluated for F1000.
