Nikos Alamanos: “Greece needs to invest in the future”

Mr. Nikolaos Alamanos was born in Athens and studied Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 1983 he obtained his “Doctorat d’état” from the University of Paris-XI. His research interests led him to participate in several experimental projects in various laboratories in France, the USA and Russia.

During his scientific career, he held several administrative positions and served on several scientific and programmatic committees: Director of the Department of Nuclear Physics at Saclay, Ann. Director of the Institute for Research on the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (IRFU), Director of Research at CEA, and Chairman of the Scientific Council of GANIL.

He also served as a member or evaluator on several national and international committees, including the Scientific Secretariat of the International Scientific Committee of the Spiral Project. Later, he led a working group on the long-term plan for the GANIL centre, with the outcome of this work helping to establish the technical and scientific environment for the SPIRAL2 project.

During the last five years (2016-2021), he has served or is serving as a member of the International Strategic Laboratory Group of JINR – DUBNA in Russia, the International Council for the Isotope Science Project (RISP) in Korea, the Scientific Council of the Large National Heavy Ion Accelerator (GANIL) in France, and as Chairman of the Committee of the Flanders Research Foundation (FWO) in Belgium.

In addition to his various scientific and administrative duties, he served for many years as a member of the editorial board of the European Physical Journal A (EPJA) and from 2013 to 2020 as EPJA Editor and Editorial Director of the Reviews Association for Experimental Physics, and is currently EPJA’s Editorial Director for the journal Reviews and Letters to the Editor.

He is the author of about 180 publications. He is also the Editor of the Scholarpedia Encyclopedia on Nuclear Physics. Since 2009 he is a member of the GSI-GENCO community. And in 2022 he was awarded the anniversary medal of the Flemish Research Foundation FWO.
