Nafplio or Anaplion, capital of the prefecture of Argolida, is one of the most famous and beautiful cities in Greece. Apart from being an administrative centre, it is also an important tourist centre, with constant traffic throughout the year.
According to mythology, the city owes its name to its settler Nafplio, son of the god Poseidon and Amymoni. In antiquity, Nafplio was essentially in the shadow of Argos, serving as its port from the 7th century BC.
The city reached the peak of its prosperity when it became the capital of the Greek state, from 1827 to 1834.
