Matt Damon, who is going to play Odysseus in the new film adaptation of “The Odyssey” directed by Christopher Nolan, was in Greece for a few days for the shooting of the highly anticipated film.
Short visit before returning for the shooting
According to reports, the famous actor arrived in the country a few days ago, departed temporarily, but is expected to return immediately for the continuation of filming. Damon was spotted at the airport in a casual look – wearing jeans, a black sweatshirt and a hat – and remained smiling and cheerful as he waited for his flight, impressing the attendees with his simplicity.
The filming locations in Greece
Preparations for the ambitious production began in early February, with crews working non-stop in Messinia and Corinthia, where much of the filming will take place. At the same time, between February 4 and 7, casting calls were held in Kalamata, Methoni and Pylos to select supporting actors and extras, as the film requires impressive scenes with mass participation.
An impressive cast in the new adaptation of “The Odyssey”
Nolan’s film will tell the story of Odysseus’ adventurous ten-year journey as he tries to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The main characters of the Homeric epic will be presented in a modern cinematic way, with no shortage of legendary challenges, mythical monsters and gods to test the hero.
The director has assembled an impressive cast for the film, with Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Lupita Niongo as Circe, Zendaya as Athena and Robert Pattinson as Poseidon.
The first official image of Matt Damon as Odysseus
In February, the first image of Matt Damon as Odysseus was released via the film’s official account. In the photo, Damon appears as the King of Ithaca, looking fierce and warlike, ready to face the challenges of his journey. The post was accompanied by the caption: “Matt Damon is Ulysses. A Christopher Nolan film. #TheOdysseyMovie – in cinemas on 17 July 2026”.
With this long-awaited production, Greece once again becomes the focus of international cinema, as its unparalleled landscape is the ideal setting for the cinematic depiction of the Homeric epic.
