The new Director in the EU Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport is Greek
An important honour for our country as at the end of May 2024, the European Commission appointed Ms Fotini Ioannidou as Director of the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) of the Directorate General for Waterborne Transport. This Directorate General of the European Commission is responsible for the European Union’s policy on mobility and transport.
In her new capacity, Ms Ioannidou, who is a Greek national, will draw on her extensive professional experience of more than three decades in the transport sector, including more than 12 years in management positions in the Commission. Ms Ioannidou has strong leadership and management skills, as well as the ability to coordinate effectively and strategically. Her excellent analytical skills and results-oriented approach will enable her to deal effectively with organisational and operational challenges. In her new capacity, she will also draw on her extensive knowledge of various aspects of transport policy, such as logistics, maritime and inland waterways transport, as well as sustainable and innovative mobility.
Ms Fotini Ioannidou is currently acting Director of the Waterborne Transport Directorate. She has successfully negotiated various policy dossiers falling within the remit of this Directorate in the context of inter-institutional relations, contributing to the conclusion of, inter alia, four trilateral dialogues on the latest maritime package. Previously she was Deputy Director in the same Directorate, responsible for preparing and coordinating the EU’s positions in the International Maritime Organisation, including on the issue of carbonisation of shipping.
Before joining the European Commission in 1994, she had worked as project manager for a European research project focusing on an integrated network of civil aviation systems.
Ms Ioannidou is an electrical engineer and holds two master’s degrees in electronics and information systems.
