A Greek Dental School among the best 50 in the world

A huge distinction for the Dental School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens came along  with the publication of the results of the QS Universities World Ranking (Quacquarelli Symonds).

According to the results, the Dental School of Athens, ranked 44th among the 500 best dental schools in the world. The importance of this success is further enhanced by the fact that for the first time the Dental School enters the 50 best dental schools in the world.

The rankings Quacquarelli Symonds use data from specialists that are collected by a large number of researchers, academics and employers. They also take into account the number of references and the impact of the published work of the teachers and researchers of each School or Department.

More specifically, four criteria – indicators with different gravity are scored. These criteria are as follows:

Academic fame:
Measurement is done through a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire employs academics of various specialties and they are asked about the best 30 universities in their areas of expertise, without being able to choose their own. Between 2014 and 2018, QS gathered more than 83,000 academic questionnaires from around the world. The weight of this specific criterion in the total score of Dental schools for 2019 is 30%.

Reputation among employers:
It is similar to the previous questionnaire survey but is addressed to a sample of employers of university graduates. More than 42,000 employers’ worldwide questionnaires have been taken into account between 2014 and 2018. Employers from all sectors of the economy have been involved in this research, including companies such as Facebook, Google and others. The weight of this criterion for dental schools is 10%.

Number of cross-references per job:
QS uses the Scopus database data. The total number of references in the work of the last five years co-written by members of the teaching and research staff of the University in the specific scientific field is summed up and divided by the corresponding total number of professors and researchers. The weight of this criterion in the total score of dental schools for 2019 is 30%.

The index h-index:
It is a way of measuring both productivity and the impact of the published work of a scientist or researcher. The index is based on all the most frequently mentioned academic works and the number of citations received in other publications. The weight of this criterion in the total score of dental schools for 2019 is 30%.

The highest overall grade that a University can receive is grade 100. The significant upward trend of the School appears particularly in academic fame and index-h, demonstrating the trust of the international scientific community towards it and the significant impact of the research project that is happening.

This is not the first time that the Dental School of Athens achieves such a high distinction. In the recent classification of individual academic fields of Academic Ranking of World Universities, known as the Shanghai List, the Dental School of Athens was ranked among the 100 best schools in the world, ranking 76th. This performance is impressive and is even higher than that of the top 13 universities of the particular academic subject (including the Harvard University, the University of Washington, Kings College London, etc.).
