Oscars 2019 Best Actress winner is Olivia Colman for “The Favourite”
In the 91st Oscar Awards Ceremony, Yorgos Lanthimos’ protagonist, Olivia Colman, the golden statuette of the Actress in a Leading Role, for her performance as Queen Anna in the movie “The Favourite“.
After ten “British Independent Film Awards”, two “Grand Jury Prize” at the Venice Festival and seven “BAFTA awards”, the much-talked-about film of the Greek director received one of the gold awards of the American Film Academy.
Olivia Colman won over Glenn Close (The Wife), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Galitza Aparithio (Roma) and Lady Gaga(One Star is Born). The Greek director, after the award was announced, stood up and kissed the British actor excitedly.
“This is hilarious, I’ve got an Oscar. I have to thank lots of people and if I forget anybody I’ll find you later and give you a massive snog. Yorgos, my best director and my best film, and Emily and Rachel the two best women in the world to fall in love with – you can imagine it wasn’t a hardship. To be in this category, with these extraordinary women and Glenn Close – you are my idol and this is not how I wanted it to be. I love you all” Olivia Colman said, clearly excited in the speech of her award.
Prior to the February 2019 ceremony, the British actress also won the Best Actress Award in Venice, the Golden Globe Awards (in the Comedy or Musical), the BAFTA Award and more than 30 other American Critics’ awards.
Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, is one of the big winners of both 91st Oscars and this year’s film season, leaving its mark through directing commercials and video clips of Greek pop stars, through the introduction of the “greek weird wave” in the consciousness of the world cinema audience and the passage of awards and praise from the biggest European film festivals.
His work, his faith in his vision, his highly-qualified collaborators at all levels of production, and the fine chemistry and deep appreciation he develops with his actors brought him to the place he is today. He has worked with Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, and even Kate Blanchett “bowed“ to his talent by saying publicly that she wants to work with him like nothing else.
He may not have won the Oscars for Best Film or Directing for which he was personally a candidate and his film may have won only one of its 10 Oscar nominations, but Yorgos Lanthimos with “The Favourite“ proved to be one of the most imaginative and fast-growing new forces in world cinema.
