Alexandre Desplat wins the Oscar for best original score

The Oscars 2018 held a pleasant surprise for the Greek-French Alexander Desplat who won the Oscar for the Best Original Score for his work in «The shape ofWater». It is the second Oscar for Desplat.

Desplat had previously won an Oscar for his work on Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. Up for best picture, The Shape of Water also won del Toro an Oscar for best director and took home the trophy for best production design. Desplat’s score that he crafted specifically for Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water came out on top in the end, rising above Hans Zimmer’s Dunkirk, Jonny Greenwood’s Phantom Thread, John Williams’ Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Carter Burwell’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

This isn’t the first time that the work of Desplat, born in Paris to a French father and a Greek mother, has been recognized. Desplat is one of the most significant music composers and an expert in composing soundtracks for the cinema. He won his first Grammy award for the score The King’s Speech. Moreover, except for receiving four Oscar nominations, Alexandre won his first Golden Globe in 2006 for his music in The Painted Veil.
