5 Greeks among the top art collectors for 2015

Most billionaires these days own art and art world billionaires are increasingly identifying with GOP values. Many of them spent large amounts in order to acquire some of the most important and expensive art work and equally spend as large sums to protect their collection from potential damages as well as from potential theft. The US site artnews.com, published the list with the 200 most important collectors worldwide. This year’s list of TOP 200 Collectors features 5 Greek collectors. The greatest Greek collector is Dimitris Daskalopoulos and we find him in the 36th position of the list with a collection numbering more than 500 projects.

Dimitris Daskalopoulos

Top200-2015-Daskalopoulos

Dimitris Daskalopoulos is the most important of the Greek collectors featured in the list as we find him in the 36th place. He made his fortune in the Greek food industry, and over the past two decades has amassed a collection of more then 500 pieces by 170 artists including John Bock, Sarah Lucas, Matthew Barney, Lynda Benglis, and Louise Bourgeois, adding about 20 new works per year. A selection of works from his collection was shown at the Guggenheim Bilbao in 2011. The collector also founded the Athens–based contemporary art foundation NEON, which stages free exhibitions and other cultural events and programs to present contemporary art to a broader audience, both in Greece and internationally. He experienced his first art “epiphany” at the age of 12, in front of a Rubens paintings at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The first piece he acquired was Rebecca Horn’s The Painting in the Inner Egg (1993), and his favorite piece is Duchamp’s Fountain (1917/1964). He told ARTnews, “I think the role of the collector, which I consider to be that of a temporary caretaker of the physical manifestation of great ideas and artistic creativity, is to think about the present but also to look ahead and see how a collection can be a part of the world in the future.” Speaking of collecting, Daskalopoulos doesn’t limit himself to art—he also collects red wine and 18th-century smoking pipes.

George Economou

Top200-2015-Economou

George Economou is in 41 place of the list. “I believe in ignoring the trends,” George Economou once told the Wall Street Journal. “People buy with their ears. You should buy with your eyes—which represent your heart—and not with your ears.” Economou has been buying with his eyes since 2001. As a result, he has amassed a large and eclectic collection which, containing everything from Picasso to lesser-known early 20th century German and Austrian artists to public telephones, and in recent years has shifted aesthetic gears to embrace postwar and contemporary art. You won’t find many German Expressionist works at his home, however. “I don’t think,” he once said, “that these are really pictures you want to have in your bedroom.” Instead he houses them at the George Economou Collection, a private museum in Athens; recent exhibitions have featured artists such as Taryn Simon, Rashid Johnson, Paul McCarthy, and Georg Baselitz. In March of 2015, Economou joined the board of the Dia Art Foundation in New York, and is also a board member of the Tate Foundation Board of Trustees.

Dakis Ioannou

Top200-2015-Joannou

Dakis Joannou is in 73rd place. He created his DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art in 1982 in Nea Ionia, a northern suburb of Athens. Joannou has told ARTnews that the foundation is the byproduct of his relationship with artists; its first acquisition was One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank (Spalding Dr. JK 241 Series) by Jeff Koons.

Dimitris Mavrommatis

Top-200_2015_Mavrommatis

Greek financier Dimitri Mavrommatis is in 102 place. He owns Art Deco furniture, 18th-century Sèvres porcelain, African sculptures, and modernist paintings, and he attributes the diversity of his collection to quitting smoking. When he worked at Salomon Brothers in the ’80s, he would go to the Met instead of having a cigarette on his breaks. There, he saw all kinds of art that piqued his curiosity. When he is not avidly collecting, Mavrommatis serves as a member of the European advisory board of Christie’s and the advisory board of Sotheby’s.

Philip Niarchos

Top-200_2015_Niarchos

Philip Niarchos is in 109th place. As the heir to the fortune and art collection of his father, the Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos, Philip S. Niarchos is believed to have one of the most valuable art collections in the world. One of his father’s greatest purchases was Pablo Picasso’s Yo, Picasso (1901), which he acquired in 1989 for $47.8 million. Niarchos has also made notable purchases of his own, such as a Vincent van Gogh self-portrait, auctioned at Christie’s in 1989, that cost him $71.5 million. Niarchos is a member of the board of trustees at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and of the International Council at Tate.
