Greek awarded as coach of the Year in Asia

Australia’s national football coach Ange Postecoglou has capped off a stunning year by taking out the Coach of the Year award at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) annual ceremony in India on Monday morning (AEDT).

Postecoglou won the Asian coach of the year award following the Socceroos’ Asian Cup triumph earlier in the year, with the Socceroos picking up the Team of the Year award.

“I am truly honored to accept the award,” Postecoglou said in comments reported by the Australian media on Monday.

The AFC awards ceremony was held in Gurgaon, just outside of Delhi.

“As an Australian, coaching our national team is a truly humbling experience and to be recognized for what we have achieved in the last 12 months is a nice recognition,” Postecoglou said.

“Australian football is taking significant steps forward and our coaches are a huge part of that. Coaching has played a significant role in the evolution of the way we play football and this award is also a positive reinforcement of the ability of Australian coaches to compete at the highest level.”

The Socceroos currently sit on top of their 2018 World Cup qualification group and are on course to qualify for Russia which, if successful, will be their fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup.
