Sixteen year old world chess champion from Kavala
Stavroula Tsolakidou is for the second time the world chess champion. She won the gold medal at the World Chess Championship in girls to 16 years, held in Halkidiki.
The young chess player of S.O.Kavalas collected 9 points in 11 games (8 wins, 2 draws, 1 defeat). In her category, 95 athletes took part from 61 countries, including 9 international master women.
Stavroula Tsolakidou started playing chess when she was eight years old, with her then twelve-year old sister Maria, studying lots and strategies, which her father cut daily from the newspapers.
“If today chess is taught in 16 of the 23 primary schools in the city of Kavala, this is due to Stavroula Tsolakidou” said at an interview at ERT Kavala, the vice president of the Chess Federation, Vassilis Theodoridis.
