Miss America 2016 is of Greek origin

Betty Cantrell the winner of the top US beauty pageant is of Greek origin.

Along with the impressive Miss America crown for a year she also won a $ 50,000 scholarship.

Betty Cantrell turned 21 years on 1st  September. She is of Greek and German descent and her real name is Vasiliki, which she took from her grandmother. Her mother is Greek. 

She grew up on a farm and knows how to drive tractors, plowing, sowing, and how to handle a shotgun. She left all that behind her, however, when she took up vocal performance studies.She sings Byzantine hymns in both Greek and English for her Greek Orthodox church choir and performs with a Greek dance group.

Betty loves to entertain friends and audiences with impressions of famous people and characters.

Her dream is to perform on Broadway. She sang “Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio” from Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” in the Miss America talent competition. She’s also won several awards in vocal performance, including the musical theater and classical singing categories of the 2014 and 2015 National Association of Teachers of Singing College-Level competition

She first appeared in a beauty pageant in 2013, and last year won the title of Miss Georgia.
