Museum of Cycladic Art: The Depiction of Death in the work of El Greco

The Museum of Cycladic Art is presenting an exhibition tribute to El Greco. It is the 400th anniversary of the painter’s death and the exhibition is entitled «The Depiction of Death in the work of El Greco».

The central showpiece will be El Greco’s painting The Burial of Christ of the National Gallery of Athens. The painting will be accompanied by two Pieta (Lamentation). The first one belongs to the collection of the Hispanic Society of America and the second one to a private collection. Both works will be exhibited digitally in almost actual size.

The simultaneous presentation of the works of El Greco along with the archaeological exhibition ‘Beyond’ invites the visitors to see together diverse masterpieces that touch upon a common, universal theme: death and immortality of the soul. The visitor will be able to find interesting correlations through a number of different prisms: time, religion, society.

The exhibition will be open for the public from 14/11/2014 until 8/2/2015.
