Telegraph: Monastiraki among the world’s best markets

Telegraph newspaper presents the best markets around the world, from Barcelona’s Boqueria to the antique markets of Rio. Greece makes an entry among the best markets with the Central Market and Monastriki Flea Market in Athens.

As the British newspaper mentions the 19th century, iron-and-glass Central Market (Sofokleous and Evripidou) near Omonia must be visited. Stallholders vie for shoppers’ attention between mounds of silver-scaled fish, blood-splattered carcasses, and piles of rosy apples and dried figs. Equally chaotic is Monastriki Flea Market, a Sunday-morning venture with locals hawking old books, pirate videos and if you’re lucky, some genuine antiques.

The rest of the list completes with Boqueria in Barcelona, Central Market in Valencia,Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Camden Market in London, Borough Market in London, Marché Place Monge in Paris, Marche du Midi/Marche in Brussels, Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne, Naschmarkt in Vienna, Feira da Praça XV in Rio de Janeiro, Portobello Road Market in London, Spitalfields Market in London, Yashow Market and Silk Market in Beijing, Stanley Market in Hong Kong, Testaccio market in Rome, Mercato di Rialto in Venice, Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, Medina in Marrakesh, Waterlooplein Flea Market in Amsterdam, Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid, Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok and Souqs in Dubai.
