The sculpture created by the Greek artist Praxitelis Tzanoulinos was unveiled in Gaia Park of Mount Royal, Canada. The sculpture is dedicated to the Olympic ideals and is a gift of the Hellenic community.

The specially commissioned work, created by artist Praxitelis Tzanoulinos and shipped recently from Greece, was generously donated to the Town by the families of Paul and Melpa Kamateros, Nicolas Tsatas, Jimmy Christopoulos and Nicolaos Arcolakis. Among the dignitaries gathered at the park to celebrate the statue’s unveiling were Thanos Kafopoulos, Consul General of Greece in Montreal, Mount Royal MP Irwin Cotler and Laurier-Dorion MNA Gerry Sklavounos, who represents the nearby Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension neighbourhood.
The sculpture is a stylized globe encircled by the Olympic rings and a few laurel branches. Made of stainless steel, the sphere measures 1.4 m in diameter and weighs more than 320 kg. The selection of Gaia Park as its setting is no accident, as the green space was named in honour of the Greek goddess of the Earth in 2009.

Located near the Town limits and within easy walking distance of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough, Gaia Park has another advantage as a location: it will allow the work to be admired by the large segment of the Greek community that lives nearby.

“We are honoured by this gift that has been bestowed on us,” said Mayor Roy. “Mount Royal is home to a many members of the Hellenic community and it is with joy that we accept this significant addition to public art in the Town. I want to offer my warm thanks to the donor families and also to pay tribute to all the households of Greek descent that have become part of our community.”
