The old Custom’s Office of Nafplion to be tapped by Ministry of Culture
Nafplio’s old custom’s office, which is classified as a historical monument and artwork, is granted by the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of Culture to house cultural events.
The building, which is believed to be the work of architect Stamatis Kleanthes, was built in 1830 and functioned as an office until 1999. It has a rectangular plan, with a floor area of 376 square meters and loft.
In 2004 the property was granted by the Public Real Estate Corporation in Nafplio municipality for use with the term to be restored. The restoration did not happen. Several requests for use of the property were made in 2012, the Port Authority of Nafplio for housing and the justice ministry for housing an administrative court.
In January 2014 the Ministry of Culture and Sports made an official request to be granted use of the property to house cultural events. The Technical Services and Housing comittee of the Finance Ministry decided to grant use of the building to the Ministry of Culture.
«I think it is an ideal place to house the modern economic history of the Peloponnese, which is interesting and a large archive exists. But this is just an idea, and we will see when the time comes. Now, we need to do an autopsy and then see the stages of study for the restoration of the building» said the general secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Lina Mendoni.
