Guardian: How the ancient Greeks shaped modern mathematics
The Guardian hosts a video animation produced by the grantee Royal Institution (Ri), with the SNF’s support, on how Ancient Greek revolutionary thinkers changed the way we see mathematics, as not merely a way of performing calculations, but a way of understanding and testing the reality of the world around us. Ancient thinking is still helping engineers, scientists, economists, architects gain a better understanding of our world.
Founded in 1799, the Royal Institution (Ri) is one of the world’s oldest and leading science communication organizations, which aims to ignite passion for scientific discovery in people of all ages, particularly young people.
Stavros Niarchos Foundation supports the development of a multifaceted educational project on the Greek legacy of mathematics and how it has influenced the development of mathematics in the West. Aimed at young audiences, the project consists of six Masterclasses, each looking at a key figure in ancient Greek mathematics, a conference on the subject hosted by the Ri, and two specially produced short films featured on the Ri Science Channel.
