Giorgos Kougioumtzidis – The first Greek “golden” World Champion in wrestling

Greek wrestling celebrates the greatest distinction in its history, as Giorgos Kougioumtzidis won the gold medal at the World Wrestling Championships, writing his name in golden letters in the book of achievements. The 23-year-old champion in the 79 kg category defeated American Heinz 3-2 in the final, becoming the first Greek athlete to ever claim gold at the World Championships, a competition held since 1904.

Until now, Greece had won 3 silver and 12 bronze medals in World Championships but never gold. Kougioumtzidis, with his passion, persistence, and talent, gave Greece the long-awaited triumph.

“Everything I do is for my name, my family, and my homeland”

From Thessaloniki to the top of the world

Born in October 2001 in Thessaloniki, Giorgos Kougioumtzidis had wrestling in his blood from a young age, as his father had also practiced the sport. Today, his younger brother is following in his footsteps, while his family, with roots from Pontus, has been a pillar of support and inspiration. “We are Pontic Greeks on both sides,” he has said, noting that with his grandparents he speaks only Pontic dialect.

His first major international experience came in 2021, when he competed in the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Budapest, aiming to reach the Tokyo Olympics. Although eliminated, the disappointment did not break him; instead, it fueled his determination.

In 2022, he won two gold medals – at the U23 European Championships in Plovdiv and at the Senior European Championships in Budapest. In 2023, he climbed once again to the top of the podium at the European Championships in Bucharest, while in 2024 he participated in the Paris Olympics. Though eliminated early, the experience gave him valuable motivation. “Defeats make you stronger. I learned a lot and wanted to come back more prepared,” he admitted.

Strength of spirit and humility

Kougioumtzidis’ journey proves that success is built with effort, perseverance, and patience, often against adverse conditions. The Greek world champion still trains at the 2nd High School of Stavroupoli, in a small hall that does not meet international standards. Yet, he never complained, turning shortcomings into fuel.

“In my life I lack nothing. I have food, I have a home, and that’s enough to say ‘I am fine.’ Money is not my goal. I wrestle for history and for my name, not for money. Of course, I fight for my country and the Greek flag,” he has stated.

A new era for Greek wrestling

With his achievement, Giorgos Kougioumtzidis has opened a new chapter in Greek wrestling history. The gold medal at the World Championships is not only a personal vindication but also a source of inspiration for future generations. An athlete who started training in the small halls of a public school in Stavroupoli has now reached the top of the world, proving that dreams can indeed come true when accompanied by devotion and love for one’s homeland.
