Pioneer in renewable materials
Gregory Stephanopoulos is a Professor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a pioneer in Metabolic Engineering and Biotechnology, a very promising scientific field for the world of industry and the manufacturing of products without wasting natural resources and polluting the environment. The metabolic engine is a platform for the development of a new viable economy based rather on renewable first material than on non renewable fuel, like oil, carbon or gas.
Stephanopoulos has contributed to the mapping of new metabolic paths for the production of chemicals and fuel. His studies led science to the clarification and advancement of the metabolic engine as a new type of organic chemistry that can gain advantage from the power of microbial metabolic engineering in framing quality products.
Dr Stephanopoulos’s is the head of a research team of 25 scientists and his laboratory work focuses on the elaboration of microbes able to contribute to the transformation of plant sugar to ethanol.
Greg Stephanopoulos was born on March 10th, 1950, in Kalamata. After graduating the Polytechnic University of Athens, he relocated to the United States to continue his studies at the University of Florida and he later received his PhD degree from the University of Minnesota.
His academic career guided him to prestigious universities, like the Harvard University and the University of Minnesota and he is currently a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the MIT.
The awarded professor of Greek descent was honoured with the ENI Award in 2011 for his research in renewable and non-conventional energy sources and with the George Washington Carver Award of the Biotech Industry Organization in 2010.
Dr Stephanopoulos is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the Society for Industrial Microbiology, the American Institute of Medicine and Biomechanics, and the American Association of the Advancement of Science. AIChE’s 2016 President is Gregory Stephanopoulos.
He has published 5 books and over 330 essays and 50 patents.
