From Thessaloniki to the innovation centers of the USA
Elomida Visvikis is one of the Greek women who honour the country’s scientific tradition, excelling in the field of high technology and innovation. Originally from Thessaloniki, Vishviki is carving an impressive path abroad as a Senior Researcher at IBM Research and has dedicated her career to issues of artificial intelligence, data security and intelligent computing systems.
From Thessaloniki to IBM labs
Elomida Visvikis studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Computer Science, and continued her postgraduate and doctoral studies in the United States. She soon joined the team of IBM Research, the research arm of the technology giant, where she became one of the leading Greek scientists in the field of industrial research. Her research work involves machine learning algorithms, network analysis, biomedical computing and cyber security models.
Contribution to international projects and initiatives
He has participated in major transnational research projects, including DARPA XAI, one of the most ambitious US projects aimed at developing “explainable” artificial intelligence. As part of the project, he developed models that explain how and why certain decisions are made by algorithms, helping to increase transparency. He has also collaborated with the Mayo Clinic and other research institutions in the field of medical technology, developing computational tools to aid diagnosis and clinical decision-making.
Named one of the “100 Women in Technology”
In 2023, Elomida Visviki was included in the list of the top 100 women in technology by the international network Women in Tech Global Movement, recognizing her contributions in critical cutting-edge areas such as cybersecurity and responsible artificial intelligence. She is an active advocate for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and participates as a mentor in international projects aimed at empowering young scientists.
Science with an ethical compass
She has stated in a speech at a technology conference in California: “Advances in artificial intelligence are not just a technical issue. It is social, political and deeply moral. The issue is not just what we can do, but what we must do.”
Elomida Visviki is an example of a scientist with technical excellence and social sensitivity. She belongs to that new generation of Greeks abroad who not only excel, but bring values and principles to the field of innovation.
