Aims to the development of autism diagnosis and treatment

Theoharis Theoharides is the Director of the Molecular Immunopharmacology and Drug Discovery Laboratory, as well as a Professor of Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Internal Medicine and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

He is the founder and president of AutismFreeBrain Inc., an organization committed to finding a cure for Autism. The research of the organization address how «immune storms» damage brain areas responsible for language and emotion, frequently dysfunctional in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Our aim is to develop an objective diagnosis and cure for ASD today.

Dr. Theoharides developed the novel foundation that mast cells play a critical role, in addition to allergies, in inflammatory diseases such as autism, atopic dermatitis, cardiovascular disease, migraines, multiple sclerosis and psoriasis. For the first time his lab found that mast cells can be activated by corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), the first molecule generated under stress, and by interleukin-1. CRH-activated mast cells lead to disruption of the gut-blood-brain barriers and thus contribute to brain inflammation. This process may participate in the pathophysiology of many diseases that worsen or precipitate under stress.

He received all his degrees from Yale University, in USA and he was awarded the Winternitz Price in Pathology. He has a Certificate in Global Leadership and Management from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, in USA. Dr. Theoharides served on the Research Faculty of Allergy and Immunology at Yale before training in internal medicine at New England Medical Center (NEMC) in Boston. He joined Tufts University in 1983 and became full professor in 1995. He helped develop the Department and graduate studies in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and was the Director of Medical Pharmacology.

He has been placed in the top 5% of authors most quoted in pharmacological and immunological journals. He is a member of four Academies and 17 scientific societies and has published over 300 research papers, with more than 10,000 citations, and two textbooks.

Dr. Theoharides has served as consultant to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor and the Inst.Pharm.Res. and Technology in Greece, and to many pharmaceutical companies. He is the Scientific Director of Algonot, LLC and has developed a number of nutraceuticals and medicinal foods for inflammatory conditions. He is also the President of Theta Biomedical Consulting and Development Co., Inc. and has received numerous US and International patents, as well as Trade Marks.
