“Diamond” talent made in Greece

Marina Diamantis is a singer and songwriter. She is better known by her stage name Marina and the Diamonds.

She was born on October 10, 1985 in Abergavenny Wales. Her father, Dimos Diamandis, is Greek, and her mother Esther is from Wales. They met when they were studying at Newcastle. Marina Diamandis grew up in Wales and returned to Greece for the last two classes of high school.

Subsequently, she studied in the private English-speaking St Catherine’s British Embassy School. She studied dance in London, but gave up quickly. She tried her luck on several auditions, without success, as she says, as she was trying to emulate the Spice Girls. Self-taught on piano, she began writing her first songs on the computer. She wrote first the lyrics, and then the music. As a child, Diamandis took inspiration from the differing musical tastes of her parents – Dolly Parton, Enya and George Michael from her mother and Haris Alexiou from her father.

Although everyone thought – even her family, that there is no future for Marina in the showbiz, Marina and The Diamonds, now impress the UK music scene with the BBC to describe her as one of the artists who preoccupy us in 2010, while the British press compares after the release of their first album «The Family Jewels» with Kate Bush and Siouxsie Sioux of the “Siouxsie and the banshess.

In summer 2011, Diamandis and Swedish recording artist Robyn performed as the opening acts for American recording artist Katy Perry’s California Dreams Tour. On 30 September, Diamandis released the track “Radioactive” through the iTunes Store, it peaked at number 25 on the UK Singles Chart. Her second studio album was preceded by its lead single “Primadonna” on 20 March 2012 in the United States, and was later made available in the United Kingdom on 6 April. The song is notable for being Diamandis’ highest-charting track on the UK Singles Chart, where it reached number 11.

Throughout 2012, Diamandis travelled for The Lonely Hearts Club Tour, her second headlining concert tour, and Mylo Xyloto Tour headlined by Coldplay, for which she served as an opening act.

On 11 August 2013, Diamandis launched her own fashion line, 11 Diamonds.

In September 2014, she shared a part of her new song “Froot” on Instagram. The song was released on 10 October to celebrate Marina’s birthday and announced to be the title track. The album debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. Currently, Froot is her highest charting album in the United States.

She has not renounced her roots and remembers her grandmother Lambrini from her childhood in Athens, and declares a fan of galaktoboureko.
