The paradise of the four seasons

Pelion, known from mythology as the home of the Centaurs and the resort of the Olympian gods, is not just a mountain. It is a living organism that offers the visitor a deeply Greek experience, full of contrasts and harmony. From the lush forests to the steep Aegean coast, Pelion reveals different faces depending on the season, making it the ideal destination for every season.

Picturesque villages: The soul of Pelion

Pelion’s real magic is hidden in its villages. More than 24 traditional villages spread across its slopes and coastline, inviting visitors to discover their secrets. Each village has its own unique atmosphere and character.

Makrinitsa, built like a balcony above Volos, offers a unique view of the Pagasitikos Gulf. Its characteristic square, full of plane trees, ornate fountains and 18th century mansions, is an ideal spot to enjoy local sweets and the feeling of being in another era.

Cosmopolitan and lively, Portaria is an ideal base for those who want to explore the mountain. It has a number of traditional guesthouses and boutique hotels, while Pelion cuisine is served in atmospheric taverns.

Tsagarada stands out for the combination of mountain and sea. The village of four districts is spread out on a slope with lush vegetation, while the thousand-year-old plane tree in the square of Agia Paraskevi is one of the most photographed spots in the area.

Zagora, one of the largest villages of Pelion, is known for its production of Zagorian apples and its historical importance. The school of Rigas Feraios and the village’s cultural association keep alive the connection with tradition and history.

The ultimate four-city experience
Pelion offers experiences every season of the year. In winter, the ski resort of Agriolefkes attracts skiing and winter sports enthusiasts, with slopes offering unique views of the Aegean Sea. Nearby Makrinitsa and Portaria are filled with visitors seeking the warmth of the guesthouses and traditional hospitality.

In spring and autumn, the paths of Pelion reveal the natural beauty of the mountain. The route from Tsagarada to Fakistra and the path of the Centaurs in Makrinitsa offer hiking experiences through forests full of chestnut trees, plane trees and flowering landscapes.

In summer, the beaches of the eastern side of Pelion become a pole of attraction. Mylopotamos, with its characteristic rock and turquoise waters, attracts visitors from all over the world. Fakistra, with its secluded beauty, and Damouchari, with its historic harbour made famous by the film “Mamma Mia!”, complete the summer experience.

Nature, activities and adventure

For nature and adventure lovers, Pelion is a true oasis. From horseback riding on the forest trails around Tsagarada and Zagora, to canyoning in the gorges of Mylopotamos and Kallithea, the options are endless. The traditional Pelion railway, known as “Moutzouris”, continues to connect Ano Lechonia with Milies, offering a romantic experience to visitors.

Cycling on the mountain paths and canoeing in the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea offer unique moments of action and discovery.

Unforgettable gastronomy

Pelion’s cuisine is one of its great assets. In the taverns of the villages, you can taste handmade pies with pure cheese and greens, smoked sausages and wild boar stew. The soups with beans or trachana offer authentic and warm flavours, ideal for the cold months.

The spoon sweets, topped with chestnut and walnut, are prepared with traditional recipes. The tsipouro of Pelion always accompanies appetizers and discussions by the fireplace, while the wine from the vineyards of Zagora wins impressions with its fruity taste.

Cultural routes and customs

The cultural life of Pelion remains alive. Easter in Zagora and Milies is celebrated with traditional customs and processions, while in summer the apple festivals bring visitors from all over Greece. The riders’ meeting in August is a celebration dedicated to nature and tradition.

The folklore museums in Milies and Makrinitsa tell the history of the place and its people. Visits to old olive mills and traditional art workshops complete the experience, giving the visitor a complete picture of life in Pelion.
