Marina Nikoloulea is a designer of Greek origins, who lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
Although she studied Zoology and Genetics, she made the decision to apply her knowledge in designing an authentic jewelry line. The jewels of the Queen Bee collection are fashioned out of bees, gold and resin.
Except from the innovative fascinating jewelry, the expatriate designer makes an effort to raise knowledge and awareness about the danger of extinction threatening the world’s bees population.
Despite being brought up in a family of beekeepers, she can’t recall being stung by bees.
«I was born and grew up in Melbourne, Australia. My parents were born in the Peloponnese and immigrated to Australia at a young age.» she told in her interview at ellines.com
She’s self-taught and draws inspiration from nature and the Earth and her need to inform the world about the preservation of our natural environment.
Each piece of jewelry gets completed in a week’s time. Marina plans to complete them in batches of ten, also accepting special orders.
After collecting the dead bees, she immerses them in resin before processing them with sandblast.
“The Queen Bee jewellery line consists of real bee specimens in resin along with gold leaf and beeswax. Being a beekeeper I get to see bees up close and marvel at their beauty. My jewellery is a way to bring the beauty of bees to people in a personal way by representing them through art and fashion. The gold leaf represents honey as in the olden days it was often called “liquid gold”. The real bee specimen represents the importance that every single bee plays in the world and the dangers which face it such as Colony Collapse Disorder. Growing up, my dad always kept beehives and I enjoyed the honey! Now that I am a beekeeper, I have learned a lot more about them and want to showcase their beauty and promote awareness about the importance of bees through my artwork.» she added.
