Antigoni Tsiouli, prima ballerina of the Cairo Opera House, is not just a distinguished artist; she is a Greek who has managed to merge the classical discipline of ballet with the soul of Greek tradition, creating a unique artistic identity.
From Greece to the international stage
In 2014, she took part in an international audition that would change her career forever. Within days, the Cairo Opera Ballet offered her a place in the corps de ballet. She recalls that moment with emotion: “It was a place that embraced me, respected me, and gave me the opportunities to grow. Through hard work and dedication, I moved from the corps to soloist and eventually prima ballerina.”
Recognition did not come easily. Countless hours of training, devotion, and sacrifice were required. Yet Antigoni’s determination, along with her passion for dance, led her to the top.
Magic in front of the Pyramids
One of her most unforgettable memories was her first performance of “Aida” at the open-air theater before the Pyramids of Giza. “It was nighttime, the stage was magically lit, and the Pyramids rose behind us like eternal spectators. When the pas de deux ended, the audience stood up, and tears filled my eyes. That moment confirmed why I chose to dedicate my life to dance.”
For her, it was more than a performance; it was a spiritual union of art and history, a moment etched forever in her heart.
Cairo and Europe: two different worlds
Having performed in leading theaters across Europe—in Paris, Madrid, and Stockholm—Antigoni knows the contrasts well. “Cairo has an intense emotional character. The audience participates and experiences each performance with their hearts. In contrast, European theaters are extremely structured and disciplined, something I deeply respect, but at times they lose a bit of the spontaneous joy of expression that I find here.”
Cairo became more than just a professional stop; it became a second home, a place that allows her to grow artistically.
A Greek artist abroad
As a Greek ballerina, she always feels she carries a dual mission: “On one hand it is an honor, and on the other a responsibility. People often connect me with ancient Greece—with harmony, art, and philosophy. That creates expectations you must live up to with your work.”
There were times she had to prove that a Greek woman could stand equal, or even excel, in international arenas. Those challenges, though difficult, made her stronger and gave her the confidence to represent her homeland not only with words but through movement on stage.
The daily life of a prima ballerina
Behind the spotlight lies strict daily discipline. Antigoni begins every day with barre and stretching, while incorporating pilates, yoga, and light strength training into her routine. She pays close attention to recovery, with ice baths, massages, and adequate sleep.
Equally important is nurturing her spirit. “I keep a few minutes of silence every day, listen to music, remind myself why I love what I do. And I make sure to surround myself with people who support and ground me—friends, family, colleagues, and, of course, my husband.”
Dreams for the future
Today, Antigoni feels mature artistically yet still restless creatively. She dreams of dancing roles such as “Manon” and “Juliet”, while also envisioning the creation of her own academy. “I want to combine technical mastery with artistic cultivation, teaching young dancers not only how to move but why. Dance is not an end in itself; it is the path that constantly leads me to something deeper.”
