Meet the speakers of  the «One Region – One Planet» conference, that ellines.com and the Region of Peloponnese co-host, on Saturday the 19th of October  2013, at 9:30a.m., at Costa Navarino Messinia.

The speakers:

Gregory Stephanopoulos

Gregory Stephanopoulos is a Professor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a pioneer in Metabolic Engineering and Biotechnology, a very promising scientific field for the world of industry and the manufacturing of products without wasting natural resources and polluting the environment. He has contributed to the mapping of new metabolic paths for the production of chemicals and fuel. His studies led science to the clarification and advancement of the metabolic engine as a new type of organic chemistry that can gain advantage from the power of microbial metabolic engineering in framing quality products.

Artemis Simopoulos 

Dr. Artemis P. Simopoulos is the founder and president of the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, a nonprofit educational organization in Washington, DC, since 1990. She was a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL), founder and president of the International Society of Nutrigenetics/ Nutrigenomics (ISNN) and founder and chair of the World Council on Nutrition, Fitness and Health (WCNFH). She is the author of The Omega Diet (HarperCollins, 1999) and has edited numerous books and journal supplements, in addition to publishing over 300 scientific papers. Dr. Simopoulos is the recipient of numerous honors and awards.

Costas Makris

Costas Makris was born in Ligourio of Epidaurus. He took the big decision to immigrate to Australia in 1963 – at the age of 16 in order to make up some money and eventually return to Greece. His early retail experience included starting a supermarket, fruit and vegetable store, and then fish and chip shops. His focus on quality resulted in the establishment of a chain stores in the whole Australia. In the early 1980′s he sold his chain of chicken shops and acquired his first shopping centre in Adelaide. Having been a retailer for years he understood his tenants and their issues and he used this skill to manage and further grow his portfolio with Makris Group, a major player in the Australian retail property market.

Hara Nikolakopoulou

Dr. Hara Nikolakopoulou was born in Mouzaki of Messinia. She studied at the Department of Biology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and after completion she decided to obtain an MSc in Immunology at the Imperial College in London and afterwards with research on leukemia at University College of London. Her next step was her PhD at Queen Mary University, related to oral and skin cancer, with a scholarship from Medical Research Council. She won the ‘Top New Investigator’ award and travel grant at the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids (ISSFAL) congress 2012, held in Vancouver, Canada, for her research on the use of Omega-3 fatty acids on skin and mouth cancer. Nowadays she is working as a Post-Doctoral research associate at Imperial College of London, studying the reactions of patients’ immune system after an open heart surgery.

Periklis Papadopoulos

Dr. Periklis Papadopoulos, Aerospace Engineering Professor and Astrophysicist, has origins in Kalamata, where he was born in 1963. In 1982, he relocated to the United States to pursue his academic dream. In 1992, he received his doctorate degree from Stanford University and since 1987, he has been working for NASA Ames in California, having committed as a partner for over 10 years to the Curiosity landing programme on planet Mars. In 2003, Periklis Papadopoulos founded Space Systems LLC. He has been awarded by NASA for his offer and has also earned the prestigious Turning Goals into Reality award. He also holds a tenure, full professor, position at San Jose State University.
