Founder of the lone Greek High School in the US

Nick Andriotis’s origins are in the village of Nikia in the island of Nisyros. At a young age, he migrated to the United States in 1956. With Greece holding a special place in his heart, Andriotis served several expatriate organizations, while working jobs, like waiter, elevator operator, restaurant owner and estate agent.

In 2013, Nick Andriotis celebrated his 40 years anniversary as a member of the St. Demetrios Community of Astoria, where he currently holds the Chairman position. The lone Greek School in the US, St. Demetrios Greek School in Astoria, was founded in 1979 under the presidency of Nick Andriotis.

In an interview with Athens Press Agency, Andriotis highlighted the difficulties he faced in his effort to establish the Greek school, the regulations on foreign languages of the State of New York and also the rise of students from Greece due to the financial crisis.

Currently, a total of 850 students learn the Greek language from nursery to high school level, afternoon classes included, and the interest is rising on a daily basis as the school administration receives calls from parents in Greece wishing to migrate to the United States.

St. Demetrios Greek School employs 82 teachers. Currently, the Greek community provides the earnings of 7 teachers from Greece, as the Greek Ministry of Education fell short in covering foreign salaries due to the financial crisis and recent cuts in expenses.

For Nick Andriotis, the St. Demetrios Greek School is a symbol of Hellenism and Orthodoxy in America and a reliable hope for the future.
