Theodore Antoniou was born in Athens. He studied violin, phonetics and composition with Manolis Kalomoiris and John Papaioannou at National and Greek Odeum of Athens. He continued studying composition and conducting at the School of Music in Munich and Darmstadt, with Riedle, Ligeti, Stockhausen, Boulez and Beriatos. Having taught at Stanford University and the Utah College of Music in Philadelphia since 1979 he is a professor of composition at Boston University. He has been honored with numerous awards in Greece and abroad and he has received orders from the institutions of Fromm, Guggenhaim and Koussevitzky and the city of Munich for the Olympic Games in 1972. For many years he was receiving the ASCAP Award, and in 1991 he was awarded a Metcalf for his excellent teaching at the Boston University. He conducted many orchestras and ensembles, including the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Paris and Berlin, the Symphony Orchestra of Bavarian Radio, the orchestra Tonhalle of Zurich the Symphony Orchestra of Tanglewood Festival etc.

Theodore Antoniou is well known for his organizational efforts in promoting contemporary music. He founded the band Alea (Alea I, Alea II and Alea III), the New Music Group of Philadelphia and the Greek Association of Contemporary Music. In 1974 he became assistant director of the Contemporary Music Centre Activities Tanglewood, where he remained until 1985. He also runs the contest synthesis Alea III, Boston. Since 1989 he is a chairman of the Greek Composers Union. There have been over 150 projects (of the houses Bärenreiter and Gunmar), and his music is performed by many orchestras around the world. He has composed scores for many theatrical and film projects and ancient tragedies, introductions, concertos, chamber music, choral, etc. Some projects are ERTNOS, Skolion, Periander, Cassandra, Greek folk songs, Concertina, Games, Clytemnestra, Catharsis, Lament for John Christou, Cheironomies, Chorochronos, White Rose, Fluxus, Bacchae, Prometheus, Kontakion.
