Remarkable resolve against state’s indifference
The National Hockey Team has already won a gold and a silver medal in international championships. Motivated by immigrants relocating to Greece and joining the team, the sport of ice hockey started in 1984 in the country. The first official game took place in 1985 in Athens.
In 1989, the first official national championship was recorded in the history of the game, taking place in Piece and Friendship Stadium, with 5 participating teams. The first national youth team was formed in 1990 and joined the World Championship, Third Category, in Yugoslavia.
In 1992, the first Men’s National Team was formed and joined the World Championship, Third Category, in South Africa. With just two weeks of training, the National Team won the bronze medal.
Despite the hurdles that the game of hockey had been facing, a National Team was formed again in 1995 and joined the World Championship in South Africa.
In 2001, the Ice Skating Rink of Moschato ceased operations. Many hockey athletes decided to quit hockey, but others kept up training at the Ice Skating Rink of Polydroso, despite the fact that it was not certified for holding games. In May 2003, the last operating ice skating rink also ceased operations, forcing the players of the National Hockey Team to travel abroad for training sessions paid for from their own pockets.
The Greek National Hockey Team rejoins the World Championship 2009, Third Category, in New Zealand. In the World Championship 2010 in Luxemburg, the National Hockey Team won the silver medal, a victory recorded as a major achievement in the history of hockey.
