Professor of Human Cellular and Molecular Biology

George Dedoussis is a professor of Human Cellular and Molecular Biology at Harokopio University in Greece. His research areas of interest are focused in human molecular genetics, nutrigenetics-nutrigenomics in obesity, ageing and coronary artery disease. He was part of major researches that led to the discovery of 44 novel genes linked to hypertension.

“The genetics of blood pressure regulation and its target organs from association studies in 342,415 individuals” and “Trans-ancestry meta-analyses identify rare and common variants associated with blood pressure and hypertension” were the two major papers that G. Dedoussis was part of. These two new papers received advance online publication in Nature Genetics as they identified a total of 44 novel gene sites associated with hypertension or high blood pressure.

G Dedoussis was born in Athens in 1966. He received his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Patras in 1988. After winning a scholarship, he went to the University of Compiegne where he graduated with the title D.E.A. (Diplome d’ etudes approfondies) in Biotechnology. He then returned to Greece and in 1995, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Athens Medical School.

After completing his military services, he worked as an associate scientist in a European project, at the Prenatal Screening Unit of the Thalassemia Center in the Laiko General Athens Hospital.

In 1988, G Dedoussis was an assistant in lab exercises in Biochemistry and Food Chemistry at the Harokopio University. In 2000, he was appointed as a lector at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of the same university. Since 2013, he is a grade A professor.

Since 2011, he is in charge of the Erasmus Program. During his time, he has tripled the funds from the National Scholarship Foundation and increased the number of the moving students from 10 to 73.

He has published more than 200 articles in major scientific journals such as Nature, Nature Communications, Science, New England Journal of Medicine and Nature Genetics, while his work has more than 9,000 citations. Since 2013, he is a member of the council at the university, a member of the Commission Research and member of the National Commission of Inquiry in the agri-food sector with a goal to plan a strategy for funding research projects in this critical area of the Greek economy.
