Touches sensitive “chords” with his bouzouki

George Georgopoulos was born in Athens in 1983 and eight years later his family moved to Kalamata, where he began his music lessons at age 9. His bouzouki teacher, Dimitris Koutis, encouraged brought him to a professional orchestra and soon afterwards he began to play with local bands.

He later studied at Messinia’s Music School, where he also took advanced theoretical lessons. His new teacher, Themis Papavasileiou, guided him to a different kind of approach, urging him to experiment with compositions by Paganini, Vivaldi and others. He then passed the national entrance examinations for the Folk and Traditional Music School at Arta.

Since that day, he has worked with renown musicians such as Manolis Mitsias, Dimitris Basis, Kostas Makedonas, Gerasimos Andreatos, Vasilis Lekkas and others. The most significant event of his musical career so far has been his cooperation with Thanasis Polykandriotis, and particularly his participation in the ceremony marking the beginning of the Athens Olympic Games.

During the last few years, he has focused in adapting pieces by Piazzola, Django Reinhardt and Petar Ralchev. As a consequence of his passion for jazz and balkan music, he recently formed, together with Dimitris Lappas and Marios Makris, a trio dedicated to musical experimentation.
