Georgia Tomaras is a professor in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University Medical Center since 2015. The same year she became also a professor in Surgery and Immunology at the same university. She was included in the Thomson Reuters list with the Highly Cited Researchers for 2016.

G. Tomaras received her bachelor at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1993 and her PhD five years later from the State University of New York (SUNY).

The Greek scientist became an affiliate at Duke Global Health Institute in 2014 and member Duke Global Health Institute in 2007.

Research in the Tomaras Laboratory in the Duke Human Vaccine Institute and Departments of Surgery, Immunology and Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University Medical Center, focuses on the identification of immune correlates of protection for preventative vaccines and identification of the mechanisms responsible for potent inhibition of human pathogens.

As Director of Research, G. Tomaras is responsible for facilitating cutting-edge, collaborative and interdisciplinary research consistent with the goals and mission of the Institute. She serves as the primary liaison between the research staff and the administration and contributes to both short-term and long-term strategic planning.

In 2015, Dr. Tomaras together with Dr. Thielman, Division of Infectious Diseases, wrote and were awarded a 2.1 million dollar T32 training grant from the National Institutes of Health for postdoctoral research training. The overall goal of the T32 “Interdisciplinary Research Training Program in AIDS (IRTPA)” is to equip the next generation of scientists, with an emphasis on training underrepresented minorities, to expertly work across multiple disciplines including vaccine immunology, clinical research, engineering, biostatistics/bioinformatics and global health.

Dr. Georgia Tomaras has received many awards, among them are the “Norman Letvin Faculty Award” in 2014, the “Mentoring Award” in 2014 and the “Norman Letvin Faculty Award” at the same year.
