Stelios Andreadis is a professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Chair of the same department. He has many honors and awards throughout his career, and most recently, he became the principal investigator in a grant of 1,85 million dollars that his university (Buffalo) and Roswell Park Cancer Institute received in order to launch an interdisciplinary stem cell research training program.

The program, called “Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine (SCiRM)”, will bring together 18 faculty members in UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and Roswell Park’s Graduate Division.

“Successful translation of stem cell breakthroughs into cell therapies requires interdisciplinary approaches that draw from a wide range of fields”, said Stelios Andreadis, who will be the grant’s principal investigator. “We plan to meet this challenge by developing an innovative graduate training program to educate the future leaders in this field”, he added.

The grant was awarded by New York State Stem Cell Science, the state’s publicly funded agency tasked with making advancements in stem cell biology. It will support eight graduate students per year for five years. Each student will conduct research in the laboratory of a SCiRM faculty member. To increase interactions, the students will be co-mentored by a second SCiRM faculty member. They expect the program will attract excellent graduate students and foster new collaborations between UB and Roswell. Research findings are expected to lead to scientific, technological and commercial advances in health care that could benefit Western New York’s economy.

Andreadis got his Bachelor in Chemical Engineering from the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki from 1985 to 1991. He got his Master of Science from the University of Michigan from 1991 to 1992, while from 1992 to 1996 he got his Master in Mathematics -again in the University of Michigan- in the field of Apllied Mathematics, and also his Ph.D in the field of Bioengineering. From 1996 to 1998 he was Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Center for Engineering in Medicine, in Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston.

Regarding his working experience from 1998 to 2003 he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, at the State University of New York at Buffalo. From 2000 to 2003 he was an Adjunct Assistant Professor, at the Department of Biological Sciences at the same university. In 2003 he became an Adjunct Associate Professor again at the University of New York at Buffalo in the Department of Biological Sciences. From 2003 to 2008 he was also an Associate Professor, in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. From 2009 he is a Visiting Professor in Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital of Boston, Department of Hematology/Oncology. Since August 2008 he is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and finally he is the Chair in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, at the University of New York at Buffalo since August 2012.
