Internationally known in the field of neuroimaging

Nikos Makris, M.D., Ph.D. is a systems neuroanatomist, imaging scientist, and psychiatrist. He is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is the Director of the Center for Morphometric Analysis and the MGH Morphometric Analysis Center Core as well as the co-Director of the Center for Neural Systems investigations. He is involved in the integration of projects, scientific and clinical effort, education and training in the domain of neural systems structural and functional anatomy and their applications in basic and clinical neuroscience using imaging. He has published over 100 papers in the neuroscience field.

Dr. Makris received his M.D. from the University of Siena, Italy and Ph.D. from Boston University, Boston. He joined the Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory (PNL) in September 2011. Currently, he uses his expertise in many projects including schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, autism, alcoholism, cocaine addiction, food disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia, stroke and normal aging in rhesus monkeys.

He has received several honors among which we can mention: Winner of Henry I. Russek First Prize Award – Boston University School of Medicine (1997), Winner of The Carol Biber Award in Behavioral Neuroscience – Department of Behavioral Neurosciences – Boston University School of Medicine (1998), Fellowship from the Italian Foreign Ministry (1990-1991), Young Investigator Award National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) (1998), Excellent Investigator Award Chinese Association of AcupunctureMoxibustion, Beijing, China (2012), Best Paper Award International Academy, Research, and Industry Association (IARIA) COGNITIVE 2014, Sixth International

Conference on Advanced Cognitive Technologies and Applications Venice, Italy.

From 1991 to 1999 he was a research fellow in Neurology in Harvard Medical School. From 1999 to 2003 he was an Instructor at the same university, from 2003 to 2007 an Assistant Professor in Neurology, from 2007 to 2008 an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry, and from 2008 until today an Associate Professor both at Neurology and Psychiatry.

He is also a member of the Academy of Sciences of Siena, Italy, and a member of the Society for Neuroscience. As far as his position as a Reviewer goes, American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, Archives of General Psychiatry, Neuroimage, Human Brain Mapping,

Cerebral Cortex, Schizophrenia Research: Neuroimaging, Brain and Language, Brain Structure and Function and Neuroscience are the most important ones.

Finally, he has taught and trained people in hospital courses and invited teaching presentations, at a local, regional, national and international level, and has more than 179 peer-reviewed publications.
