Focuses on preventing possible heart attacks

Yiannis Chatzizisis is a researcher – cardiologist  in “Brigham and Women’s” hospital, Harvard Medical School and a Research Fellow in Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He lives and works in the United States, focusing his research on methods of heart attack prevention. He was born in Larissa, Greece, and spent his childhood in a small city called Deskati in the area of Grevena, Greece. A few years later they moved to Thessaloniki, where he went to highschool.

In 1994 he achieves what he had dreamt of as a child, and becomes a student at the Medical School of Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. “I wanted to study medicine since the time I went to highschool, because there were always doctors who were real role models for us, who contributed highly to science and tried to offer something precious to humanity. Furthermore, besides taking care of a patient, I have always loved research, posing questions and seeking for answers”, says Yiannis at a past interview.

He obtained his MD in 2000 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and continued by obtaining his Msc and Ph.D at the Cardiovascular Engineering and Atherosclerosis Laboratory, working under the guidance of George Giannoglou, his “mentor” and Senior Professor of cardiology.

It is in that time that he completes his first innovative scientific paper: a new methodology concerning the development of 3D coronary arteries.

In 2005 he becomes a Research Fellow at “Brigham and Women’s” hospital, Harvard Medical School, and one year later, he starts working in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is a Research Fellow until today.

He is the recipient of 40 international and national scientific awards. He received four of those awards in 2008, by the American Heart Association, the European Society of Cardiology, the Hellenic Cardiological Society and the Academy of Athens. In 2008 and 2009 he was awarded with the “Young Investigator’s” golden and silver medal by the European Society of Cardiology. He has also been awarded with the “Konstantinos Samaras” award as the best Young Researcher in the field of Cardiovascular Medicine, by the 1st Cardiological Clinic of of Athens University and the Hellenic Institution of Cardiology (ELIKAR).

His research has been supported by grants from American, European and Greek funding bodies including the Behrakis Foundation, through Harvard’s Cardiovascular Program, the Hellenic Cardiological Society, and the Hellenic Institution of Cardiology (ELIKAR)
