The only Greek doctor in Antarctica

Evangelos Kaimakamis was born on April 27th, 1974, in Larisa and graduated the School of Medicine of Thessaloniki.

He’s the only Greek scientist joining the European Space Agency Program, at the Concrodia Base in Antarctica.

“I have the honour and responsibility to be part of this research campaign and get a little taste of the life of the original Antarctic explorers.”

The ESA experimental base was set up for the study of the effects of extreme conditions on humans, aiming at including the findings in future space missions.

“It is also quite cold here, for example the current temperature is -33oC with a wind chill of -44oC! You notice the cold wind as soon as you get out of the aircraft arriving here!”, he mentions in his blog on http://kaimakamis.wordpress.com, where he daily shares his experiences and his current status, also posting original photographic material.

Kaimakamis’s interests range from aeronautics and the history of aviation to aerodynamics and space missions and he is also licensed as amateur aircraft operator.

Moreover, Evangelos Kaimakamis has authored and published a collection of poems, under the title Elements Collection from a Spring.
