A long-term research on the mutation of cancer cells

A group of researchers from Switzerland, Greece and Finland, led by Greek professors of the University of Geneva Thanos Halazonetis and Stylianos Antonarakis, recently identified a genetic mechanism for the transformation of precancerous of colon polyps into cancer tumors.

Group’s scientists sequenced the DNA of biopsied tissue from colon polyps, showing that these precancerous lesions have a specific mutation profile and given an increased frequency of acquisition of certain colon mutations, they progress towards malignancy. Thanks to these findings, recommendations for polyps biopsies and DNA profiling could henceforth be refined on a case to case basis in the close future.

Dr Thanos Halazonetis received his doctorate in Medicine from Harvard University in 1989 and worked as professor at the University of Pensylvania until 2006. Since then, he has been professor at the Biology and Biochemistry Faculties in the University of Geneva.

Dr Stylianos Antonarakis studied Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and received his doctorate in 1983. Currently, he is professor of genetics medicine at the School of Medicine of the University of Geneva and Director of the Medicine of Genetics Department of the local university hospital.

From the Greek side, Sotiris Sotiriou from the University of Geneva, Professor Stavros Sougioultzis and Professor Vassilis Gorgoulis from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens also participated in the research.

  1. Been reading about this tragedy since the story broke.

Why is it that wonderful souls who ‘one day’ can change the world have to leave it ??

Matt, may your soul rest in peace and may God’s perpetual light shine on you. You will be in paradise for always.
